The Season of Top-Dressing Maize Crops in Oyugis
As the rains continue to bless the fields of Oyugis, many farmers are now entering one of the most important stages in maize farming — top-dressing. Across the villages and farms surrounding Oyugis, maize crops are growing steadily, and this is the right season for farmers to apply fertilizer to boost healthy growth and improve harvests.
This season, the Oyugis Integrated Project (OIP) has targeted 15 women self-help groups engaged in farming activities to receive support through the provision of urea fertilizer. This initiative is part of OIP’s ongoing mission of empowering women economically while strengthening food security within the community.
The support goes beyond simply providing fertilizer. Through these farming activities, the women groups are also receiving financial literacy training to help them manage farm income, save money, plan household budgets, and invest wisely in future farming activities. By combining agricultural support with financial education, OIP aims to build sustainable livelihoods for families in the region.
The importance of empowering women farmers cannot be overstated. Women play a major role in food production and family welfare within our communities. When women are equipped with farming knowledge, inputs, and financial skills, entire families benefit through improved nutrition, better education for children, and increased household stability.
In addition, supporting self-help groups strengthens unity and cooperation among community members. The groups provide spaces where women can share farming experiences, encourage one another, and work together toward common goals. Such initiatives also reduce poverty by helping families generate income from improved agricultural productivity.
At OIP, we believe that empowering communities begins with supporting the people who work tirelessly to feed their families and educate their children. As this top-dressing season continues, we encourage farmers to make good use of the rains, follow proper farming practices, and continue embracing group-based farming initiatives that promote growth and self-reliance.
Together, we can build healthier families, stronger communities, and a more food-secure future for Oyugis.
